Alexandria Grand Port: Expansive Development Set to Elevate Global Maritime Connectivity
Shipping Arabia, September 10, 2024 — In a comprehensive effort to enhance its maritime infrastructure, Egypt’s Ministry of Transport is undertaking significant development projects across its key ports, with the Alexandria Grand Port project leading the charge.
This ambitious initiative includes the modernization of both Alexandria and Dekheila ports, along with the planned construction of Max Port.
A recent visit by Youm7 to Alexandria Port highlighted notable progress, particularly a railway renovation project valued at EGP 53.4 million.
This initiative aims to improve goods transportation and alleviate road congestion, covering 3.5 kilometers and enhancing the port’s multimodal transport capabilities.
At the same time, a multi-purpose terminal is being developed at Berth 100 of Dekheila Port, with a budget of EGP 3.4 billion.
This facility is designed to significantly increase the port’s annual handling capacity by allowing multiple large vessels to dock simultaneously, thereby improving cargo handling efficiency.
To further support Dekheila’s operations, a dry bulk terminal project is also in progress, which aims to expand grain storage and handling by millions of tons each year.
Stretching over a kilometer and involving an investment of EGP 1.6 billion, this project positions Dekheila as a vital hub in Egypt’s grain logistics framework.
A key aspect of these advancements is the breakwater project at Alexandria Grand Port, which extends 7,200 meters and has been constructed at a cost of EGP 6.7 billion by local firms.
This initiative reflects the national commitment to enhancing and safeguarding maritime operations.
The Tahya Misr multi-purpose terminal at Alexandria Port embodies the ministry’s vision of transforming Egypt into a global trade and logistics center.
Capable of handling up to 15 million tons of cargo annually, this terminal features advanced facilities to accommodate modern mega-ships and provides critical links to inland logistics networks, including a direct railway connection to the 6th of October City.
Launched in 2020, the terminal’s construction involved innovative engineering solutions to address geographical challenges, resulting in a state-of-the-art facility that adheres to the highest international standards.
The collaboration with CMA-CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics that holds a 32% stake in the terminal, underscores the strategic importance of this project in enhancing the operational efficiency and global reputation of Egyptian ports.
