CMA CGM Announces New Freight Rate Adjustments for Shipments to the Red Sea and Middle East
Shipping Arabia, March 17, 2025 — CMA CGM, the French shipping giant, has revealed updates to its freight rates and the introduction of an Overweight Surcharge (OWS) for shipments originating from Northern European ports to various regions, including the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, and the Red Sea. This new policy will come into effect on April 1 for the surcharges and on April 16 for the revised rates.
Beginning April 1, CMA CGM will implement an Overweight Surcharge of $50 per 20-foot dry container for shipments exceeding 15 tons, including tare weight. This surcharge will apply to all ports in the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, the Arabian Gulf, and the Red Sea, reflecting the company’s strategy to manage transportation costs effectively in light of varying cargo weights.
Additionally, starting April 16, CMA CGM will adjust its freight rates for shipments from Northern Europe to these regions. The new rates will include an increase of $1,000 per 20-foot container and $1,200 per 40-foot container for shipments to the Indian Subcontinent. Routes to Arabian Gulf ports will see an increase of $1,100 per 20-foot container and $1,200 per 40-foot container. Furthermore, freight rates for Red Sea ports will rise significantly by $1,900 per 20-foot container and $2,100 per 40-foot container.
These changes are part of CMA CGM’s ongoing efforts to align its services with current market conditions and operational requirements, ensuring efficient and reliable shipping solutions throughout its global network. The company remains dedicated to maintaining high service standards while adapting to the evolving global shipping landscape.
